CURRICULUM

Balanced Literacy
We incorporate all the communication skills into a balanced literacy program in developing success in reading and writing.

Phonics
Our primary children are engaged in strong phonics based instruction to help give them a solid foundation for success in reading.

Sixth Grade Studies
The sixth grade students travel to Catalina Island off the coast of California for three days in the fall to further their studies of earth science.

PROGRAMS

Performing Arts
In addition to the strong academic program at Kiva Elementary School, students in grades four through six participate in band, orchestra, and choir. Wonderful musical presentations are a part of these programs. The arts are an integral part of the school community. Each year every classroom takes a field trip to see a live production sponsored by the Arts and Education Council and supported by the Kiva PTO.

Technology
Technology is integrated throughout the classrooms and the curriculum. Our Discovery Center and Cougar Learning Center provide opportunities for students to explore the Internet and sharpen their computer literacy skills. Private contributions and district funding have helped to make our Computer Labs state of the art technology centers, including the use of projectors, an online benchmark testing program, the Accelerated Reader program and SuccessMaker Enterprise program.  In addition to the two Dell computer labs, each classroom is equipped with two computers networked to the Internet.  Kiva has a closed-circuit broadcasting system which is now broadcast through the new projectors in every classroom. The students run this station. Each morning a group of students leads the school in the Pledge of Allegiance, which is followed by announcements, and the morning message.  Teacher computers are connected to document cameras and to the ceiling projectors, providing useful teaching tools for display of educational streaming videos, lesson demonstrations, task lists, and displays.  Almost every classroom has also been equipped with an interactive board.

Media Center
Students receive weekly library classes. Instruction includes literature appreciation and library usage that focuses on research and reference skills. Computers are an important part of the Media Center where students can do research online, do word processing, or search for books via the electronic catalog. Classrooms are networked so that the electronic catalog may also be accessed from the classroom.

Artist in Residence
Each year Kiva works with a local artist on projects involving children in all grade levels.

Book Buddies
The Kiva Book Buddy program is run by the Media Specialist.
